Rangers shoot down 67's 4-3 in the shootout

Justin Bailey scored in the 3rd round of the shootout as the Kitchener Rangers edged the Ottawa 67’s 4-3 on Sunday afternoon to snap an 8 game losing streak.  Bailey, a Buffalo Sabres’ draft pick, also scored the Rangers second goal to tie the game.

Coming off a disappointing effort against the Saginaw Spirit on Friday night, the 67’s played a very good opening period.  Alex Lintuniemi opened the scoring taking advantage of the momentum created from a powerplay.  He fired a point shot behind rookie Matthew Greenfield as the penalty expired for his first OHL career goal.  Four minutes later, Brett Gustavsen bounced on a Doug Blaisdell giveaway in the offensive zone and scored on the backhand to give Ottawa a 2-0 lead and their first opening frame lead at home of the season.

The 67’s did a great job at keeping the Rangers forwards and 9 shots to the perimeter.  While only two were good scoring chances, Philippe Trudeau was there when he needed to be.

But then things started to go south.

The Rangers woke up and competed harder but it wasn’t until the 6 minute mark of the second period that the Rangers were able to solve Trudeau.  Darby Llewellyn intercepted a weak lead pass, fed the puck to rookie Nick Magyar who knocked it in all alone skating to the front of the net.  It happened so quickly that Trudeau was not able to react.

After a lot of Rangers pressure, Justin Bailey would tie the game at 2 midway through the second.  Trudeau made a big save on his initial shot, but sent the rebound right back to him.  Bailey made no mistake and knocked it in untouched.  Brent Pedersen gave the Rangers their first lead of the game late in the second period.  Shots were 28-15 for the Rangers (18 in the period) and they lead 3-2 after two.

The 67’s had a lot of work cut out for them as they were outchanced, outworked and outskilled in every aspect of the second period.  Unfortunately, the third period did not start any better and the Rangers continued to dominate.  The Rangers threw another 18 shots at the net in the third but only one goal was scored and it wasn’t in favour of them.

After making a great play in the second period, Darby Llewellyn took a costly checking from behind penalty on rookie sensation Travis Konecny in the final minute of the one goal game.  With one minute to go, coach Chris Byrne pulled Trudeau for the extra attacker putting Konecny back on the ice.  With a knack to find open ice, Konecny placed himself on the side of the net and was left wide open before shooting the puck past Greening on the short side to tie the game at the 19:02 minute mark.

The 67’s and Rangers held on for the remainder of the period and through overtime before heading to a shootout.  Darby Llewellyn and Justin Bailey scored for the Rangers while Brendan Bell was the lone goal scorer for the 67’s.  The 67’s dropped their 3rd straight game and suffered their first shootout loss of the season.

The 67’s are next in action Thursday when they host the London Knights.
