Playoffs Back In Range After 4-2 Defeat of Rangers

In a game where they were heavily outshot, didn’t have a man advantage and had to kill five penalties, including a late five-minute major, the Ottawa 67’s pulled out a character 4-2 win in Kitchener on Sunday.

The win gives Ottawa a much-needed two points coming out of the weekend, and they re-enter the playoff picture with a Niagara loss to Mississauga.

Philippe Trudeau had to turn away 39 shots for the win, with his toughest test coming in the last 15 minutes of a then-3-2 game, when John Urbanic was ejected for a cross-check to the head of Mike Davies.

Urbanic didn’t have much luck the day after scoring his third of the season.  He had a chance to open the scoring on a penalty shot in the first but couldn’t beat Jordan DeKort.

After the penalty shot, with the visitors being outshot 13-3, they turned on the pressure and garnered a number of scoring chances.

Before the period was done, Brett Gustavsen beat DeKort with a backhander.

On Kitchener’s first of five powerplays, Brendan Bell scored on a shorthanded breakaway while Frank Hora answered just seconds later to get Kitchener on the board.

Darby Llewellyn tied the game in the final minute of the second, but Connor Brown, continuing to benefit from his top-six minutes, scored the winner in the third.

Bell scored on his second breakaway of the night, albeit on an empty net.

Ottawa will have an opportunity to use their game in hand on Wednesday when they take on a familiar foe in the Belleville Bulls.
