67's Punch Their Ticket To The Playoffs With 7-3 Blowout

If playing spoiler for a playoff hopeful wasn’t easy enough for the Ottawa 67’s on Friday, it got even easier on Saturday as they teed off on a Mississauga Steelheads team short on rest and defencemen.

Having arrived in the Nation’s Capital just 11 hours prior to gametime, the Trout were outshot 19-2 in the opening frame, down 4-1 before they could get their legs under them.

“It was a good four-line win today,” said Jeff Brown.  “For the most part we were pretty good with a couple hiccups.”

For the second time this season against Mississauga, Liam Herbst allowed the first shot on goal to beat him.  Luckily, it was a while until he faced his next one.

By the time the visitors lost Brandon Devlin and Sean Day to injury, and pulled starting netminder Jacob Brennan, the game was already over.

“We knew they came in late and it’s tough for them playing an away game like that,” added Nathan Todd, who scored twice on cross-ice one-timers, highlighting an afternoon where the 67’s tried to play keep away.

“It was good on us to come out and take control of the game like that.

By the second period, Ottawa’s foot was off the gas, actually getting outshot in the middle frame, but Herbst made 20 saves to preserve the win.

“When you get up a few goals, it’s hard to keep the game plan,” said Brown.  “It was a pretty good win for us.  We’ll find out what we’re made of tomorrow.”

The schedule gets more difficult for one night as the 67’s head to Oshawa to finish their weekend.

Back in the promised land

Jeff Brown knew what he came to Ottawa to do, getting the team back to the postseason.

The win over ninth-place Mississauga ensures that their total of 69 points can’t be surpassed by any non-playoff team, cementing themselves in the 2015 playoffs.

“It’s not me, it’s the players,” said Brown.  “When they buy in and play for one another and become a team, that’s what it’s all about.  It’s fun to be able to stand behind the bench.”

Ottawa passed an idle North Bay for third in the East with the win this afternoon.
