67's close out 2015 with a 6-4 loss to the Otters

The Ottawa 67’s were in Pennsylvania tonight hoping to close out 2015 on a high note but it was the Erie Otters that had other plans. Kyle Pettit (Vancouver Canucks) scored a pair of goals to lead his team to a 6-4 win over the visiting 67’s.

Glimpse into the future; 67's win 5-2 in Kingston

The 67's got a small glimpse into their future on Tuesday, dressing three December call-ups from lower tiers of junior and taking out a Frontenacs team that had beat them twice this month.

67's season resumes as trade deadline approaches fast

Trade deadline is just around the corner and Ottawa 67’s have been quiet on the trade front.  Jeff Brown, who is in his first season as General Manager, has some big decisions to make.

The 2015-16 OHL season has been anything but perfect for this Ottawa squad. The 67’s kicked off their season with 3 straight losses where Coach Brown called out his team out for having a lack of identity and a lack of passion. That conversation lit a spark underneath the team and they won the next 5 straight.

Powerplays prove pointless for 67's

An exciting first period riddled with shots, goals and powerplay opportunities wasn’t enough to get the home team the win against the Conference-leading Kingston Frontenacs Saturday afternoon.

Ottawa fell 4-2 to Kingston in a game dictated by special teams.

The Fronts’ discipline was lacking from early on, with the 67’s getting five powerplay opportunities in the first period alone, including a double-minor called on Austin Grzenia for a high-stick 5:46 into the game.

The 67’s managed to capitalize on two of the opportunities. Dante Salituro beat Kingston goalie Lucas Peressini, with the help of Sam Studnicka and Evan de Haan 2:56 into the first frame.

De Haan also got an assist on Jeremiah Addison’s powerplay goal at the 8:44 mark. Austen Keating earned the other assist on the play.

When the clock ran down after the first, things looked great for Ottawa.
A delayed slew-footing call on Kingston’s Nathan Billitier as the horn sounded meant the 67’s would start the second with a five-minute powerplay while leading 2-0, and dominating the shot clock 19-5.

But the only goal scored while that penalty was served was a shorthanded one from Cody Caron 4:40 into the second.

“Our powerplay let us down,” said head coach Jeff Brown after the game. “There was no enthusiasm or excitement.”

“Nobody is ready to compete,” he added.

Studnicka did manage to score a late second-period goal, initially allowed by referees, but after consulting with Kingston head coach Paul McFarland, the goal was called back for goaltender contact.

The call didn’t sit well with Brown or Ottawa fans, since the OHL rule book states a goal cannot be reviewed for that reason.

“I’ve never seen that in all my years of hockey,” said Brown, though he says there’s no point going over the call with the league.

The Fronts and 67’s went into the third period tied at two, but Konstantin Chernyuk scored a quick powerplay goal 3:01 into the final frame, giving Kingston a 3-2 lead.

The 67’s were unable to muster up momentum to find the back of the net again, despite their 33 shot performance. Kingston recorded 34 shots throughout the game.

With the help of Conor McGlynn and Ted Nichol, Jason Robertson beat Leo Lazarev with one of those shots just under eight minutes into the final period to secure a two goal lead.

The Fronts held on to win 4-2, keeping their spot atop the Eastern Conference.

The 67’s now sit in 7th in the Conference as the league heads into the Christmas break.

Ottawa’s next game will give them a chance at redemption against the Fronts as they’re set to play in Kingston on December 29. The next home game will be played at TD Stadium Arena January 8 against the Peterborough Petes.

67's snap 6-game losing skid with close 5-4 regulation win vs the Petes

In the midst of their worst losing streak since early 2013, the Ottawa 67’s finally grabbed a much needed 2 points in a big 5-4 regulation win against the division rival Peterborough Petes. Evan de Haan led the way with a pair of goals and an assist to help snap a season high 6-game losing streak.

Brown speechless after defensive debacle

Ottawa's defensive collapses have always given Jeff Brown fits, but Sunday's debacle was so bad to the point that he wouldn't speak with media.

While he probably would have liked to discuss his top rookie's scoring touch, he was without words following an epic collapse in the game's final 34 minutes, ending in an 8-5 Greyhounds win.

Falkovsky heads to Finland with reset button in hand

Losing their captain up front may be the biggest hole the 67's depth chart has going into the World Juniors, but physically, the largest omission from the lineup will be on the blueline as 6'9 Stepan Falkovsky heads over to Finland to play for Team Belarus.

He does so, however, without a long leash from the bench boss on his current team.

Captainless Otters hand captainless 67's fifth straight loss

With Hockey Canada’s national under-20 program poaching 80 points from the Erie Otters and 45 from Ottawa, Erie took a 2-1 decision between the two watered-down teams, handing the 67’s their fifth straight loss.

67's fall 4-3 to Fronts in regulation on eve of Team Canada camp

Travis Konecny likely played his last game as a member of the Ottawa 67’s this year. Tomorrow morning he will join 30 hopefuls at the Team Canada selection camp in Etobicoke, ON. There are no guarantees, but Konecny is looked to as one of the “for sure” players to make the U20 squad which means he would miss the remaining 67’s games in 2015 and a couple games to start 2016.

News & notes, something has to give with OA's

The OHL trade deadline is less than five weeks away and the 67's are in need of a reboot.

After an 0-3-0 weekend, the Barberpoles are in a mid-season crisis, out of one of the East's four home ice advantage spots and trending downwards.

67's fall short of comeback against Sting

The Ottawa 67’s wrapped up a tough weekend on the road Sunday afternoon, with their third loss in as many days, this time to the Sarnia Sting by a score of 5-4.

The Sting took a hold over the 67’s early on, taking a two-goal lead into the dressing room after the first. Matt Mistele made it 3-0 just 2:51 into the second period, making a comeback seem out of reach for Ottawa.

It was Mistele’s second of the game. He also opened up scoring 10:10 into the first, a goal celebrated by the launching of bears onto the ice for Sarnia’s Teddy Bear Toss game.

But Dante Salituro gave the 67’s hope with a strong four-point performance, including three goals. He was also awarded third star of the game.

His third gave Ottawa their first lead of the game midway through the third period. With the help of Travis Konecny, Salituro found the back of the net on a 5-on-3 powerplay, giving the 67’s a 4-3 lead.

But the scoring outburst wasn’t enough to earn Ottawa a win.

About two and a half minutes after Salituro’s powerplay goal the Sting got their own 5-on-3 opportunity. Nikita Korostelev wasted no time, burying the puck past 67’s goalie Leo Lazarev 36 seconds later to tie the game at four.

Mistele, whose three-point night earned him first star, helped his team regain the lead with an assist on a Jakob Chychrun goal with just over four minutes remaining in the game.

Despite a late checking from behind penalty to Stepan Falkovsky, Konecny managed to steal the puck from the Sting and skated up the ice on a breakaway but Sarnia netminder Justin Fazio made a quick save, protecting his team’s 5-4 lead.

The 67’s currently sit in fifth place in the Eastern conference, with a record of 16-12-1. The next game will be played in Ottawa at TD Place arena on Wednesday, Dec 9 at 7:00pm.

Knights top line runs rampant in Konecny's hometown, Herbst's first OHL rink

2013 first overall pick Travis Konecny will be a lot happier come Boxing Day should he be teammates, or potentially linemates, with the last pick in that year's first round, Mitch Marner.

67’s lose 5-1 to the Rangers as specialty teams implode

Adam Mascherin scored back-to-back power play goals in the second period to lead the Kitchener Rangers to a 5-1 victory over the visiting Ottawa 67’s.

The Ottawa 67’s came into Kitchener with the 4th best power play and the 5th best penalty kill in the entire Ontario Hockey League.

Well, you can throw those stats out the window for tonight’s game.
